SPEAKER BIO

Naziema Jappie

Dr Naziema Jappie is known for her work as a trade union activist in women’s and workers’ rights and has a extensive experience in higher education management and administration. She is currently the Director for the Centre for Educational Assessments (CEA), Deputy Dean (CHED) at the University of Cape Town (UCT).

In January 2017 she was appointed as Honorary Consul for the Republic of the Maldives. Her work experiences includes being a lecturer and Dean of Students at M.L. Sultan and Wits University and Durban University of Technology. She holds a PhD in Education with a research focus in social justice issues in higher education. Her international experience includes working at the Institute for Women’s Studies (ASR) in Lahore, Pakistan; Regis College in Boston, USA; University of Campinas Sao Paulo Brazil; Beijing Normal University, China; and Rutgers University, USA, including many awards and grants for her work nationally and internationally. She has served as a member of the task force for Gender Equity in Education; President of the Student Affairs Association (SASSAP); Vice Chair of Higher Education AIDS (HEAIDS) Programme for Universities; the Vice Chairperson of the South African Women’s Forum and the Shura Council for Women (New York). She currently serves as Non-Executive Director for Frontier Transport Holdings; Deneb Investments and is a member the National Council for Measurement in Education (NCME); World Education Research Association (WERA) and South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) and the Western Cape Diplomatic Corp.
