SPEAKER BIO

Fazela Haniff

Fazela Haniff immigrated to Canada in 1974 from Guyana, lived in Baton Rouge, Louisiana for three years, then relocaated to South Africa from 1994 to 2012 and returned to Canada in 2012. Her heading up the Urban Alliance on Race relations in 1990 afforded Fazela the skills and insight to champion Diversity and Inclusion throughout her career when such issues were tabu.

This was evident in her successfully diversifying the management and leadership of L’Oréal South Africa in a climate of resistance.  Her solutions-oriented philosophy continued with her international work. Through a Diversity and Inclusion lens, Fazela is a global HR, OD and HE internationalization strategist. She has worked with diverse teams in the public and private sectors in over 30 countries.

Fazela completed her Human Resources Management studies at Toronto Metropoliton University, Higher Education Management from the University of the Witwatersrand and Bachelor of Business Administration from Yorkville University. She is the Past President of the International Education Association of South Africa and the first woman president. In 2010 she received an award in recognition of “Exemplary Leadership as IEASA President.”

She has contributed widely to the internationalization dialogue, outlining the value of understanding international cultures and inclusion, and the effect of institutional racism.  She has also contributed to publications related to international higher education challenges and engagement with organizations such as ACEI, IEASA, ANNIE, ACE, AIEA, EAIE APAIE, IIE, NIEA and NAFSA.

Fazela currently lives in Canada and consults widely on Strategic Leadership through a Diversity and Belonging lens.
